Canadiens want to sign Briere TheFourthPeriod.com
The Montreal Canadiens will make an attempt to sign unrestricted free agent center Daniel Briere to a long-term contract, TFP has learned.
Briere, 29, could command upwards of $7 million, per season, via the open market, but would be willing to sign for less if it meant playing for the Habs next season.
Sources told TFP that the Canadiens are prepared to offer Briere long-term deal, which could range from four-years to six-years, based on financial terms and Briere's overall interest.
The Ottawa Sun is reporting the Canadiens desperately want to sign Briere and sources told the paper he'd like to play for the Habs. Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Edmonton and San Jose are all going to offer Briere a contract, according to the Sun.
Briere has already rejected a five-year, $25 million contract offered by the Buffalo Sabres

Lots of player signings today, and so far the Habs made 0 of them. Some of them are: - Anaheim signs defenceman Mathieu Schneider to a two-year deal.
- Daniel Briere has signed with the Philadelphia Flyers for eight years and $52 million. The deal includes a no movement clause.
- Defenceman Brian Rafalski agrees to a five year, $30 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings.
- The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed winger Jason Blake to a five-year deal worth $20 million.
- The New York Rangers have signed forward Chris Drury to a five-year deal worth $35.25 million.
- The New York Rangers have signed forward Scott Gomez to a seven-year deal worth $51.5 million.
- The Colorado Avalanche have signed D Scott Hannan to a four-year deal worth $18 million.

Seems as though players just don't want to play in MTL. Look for the Habs to make an offer to Zubrus.

With the way taxes are structured in Quebec more money offered by the Habs doesn't necessarily mean more money in the players pockets. A $7 million contract in Montreal is akin to about a $6.25 million contract anywhere else, especially in the US. Plus Briere and Smyth signed for longer terms in Philadelphia and Colorado respectivally, which makes a big difference (it's hard to compete with a ridiculous 8-year contract). Not to mention the no movement clauses involved, which I'm thankful Gainey isn't interested in getting into. Rumors will now swirl about trade possibilities for the Habs (Marleau or Elias I've read...) but it seems likely that it'll be the same kinds of ho-hum signings (Zubrus, Bertuzzi, even Yashin perhaps) and another season of playoff bubblehood. Oh well, at least the Savior Price is still on the way.

Habs nab Hamrlik, Smolinski
The Czech defenceman signed a US$22 million, four-year contract as an unrestricted free agent on Monday with the Montreal Canadiens. "I got a few offers from teams in the U.S., but I told my agent I'd love to play in Canada," the 33-year-old said from Zlin, Czech Republic on a conference call, comparing hockey in Canada to playing soccer in England. "It's great hockey.
"Players should appreciate it -- the fans, the organizations, the media. Everything is there."
He heard good things about playing there from Czech friends, notably former Canadien Martin Rucinsky.
"Rucinsky told me there's nothing better than playing in Montreal," he said, before adding with a laugh: "But he said just watch out for the media, they're everywhere and there's too many of them."
The Canadiens also bolstered their offence, signing Bryan Smolinski to a one-year deal worth $2 million. Smolinski, 35, had 18 goals and 26 assists in 82 games between the Vancouver Canucks and the Chicago Blackhawks.

$22-million over 4 years is a lot of money for Hamrlik, but I'd rather spend that much on him then Souray. Very good #2 behind Markov. Smolinski is a low risk signing, a solid veteran #3 centreman. Now they just need to add a top 6 forward somehow, even if it's in a trade.
