MONTREAL (CP) - Sergei Samsonov's rocky tenure with the Montreal Canadiens is over.
The 28-year-old forward was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks Saturday for defenceman Jassen Cullimore and forward Tony Salmelainen.
Samsonov has one season at US$3.5 million left on his contract.
''Considering we didn't have plans for Sergei Samsonov in our organization for next season, our options were either to buy out his contact or to trade him in order to allow us to save valuable cap room over the next two seasons,'' Canadiens GM Bob Gainey said in a release.
Cullimore is set to earn $1.9 million next season and the Canadiens say they have agreed to a buyout. Salmelainen earns $750,000 next year and the team says his situation will be evaluated in the coming weeks.

Tony Salmelainen skills competition
"Has a goal-scorer's mentality, soft hands and great speed. Is tenacious and feisty, despite his smallish frame." (per TSN)
"This upcoming season Ruutu will be joined by Finn winger Tony Salmeleinen who bullets down the ice."
"Tony Salmeleinen (12,3) – Kevin Lowe has been singing the praises of Tony Salmeleinen for about 2 years now. Finally he’s come over to North America. Salmeleinen is another small fast winger for the Oilers, with some decent offensive upside. His speed is said to be roughly comparable with Todd Marchant, perhaps even better."
"Word on Salmelainen is that he's weak on and off the puck and often loses the puck because his hands can't catch up to his feet."

Canadiens cut pair loose to save some cap money The Gazette
While Canadiens fans wait to see whether the team can keep Sheldon Souray or lure a free agent like Daniel Briere, who turned down a five-year offer from Buffalo yesterday, general manager Bob Gainey did some housekeeping.
Gainey bought out both players he acquired from Chicago in return for Sergei Samsonov - defenceman Jassen Cullimore and forward Tony Salmalainen.
The team saved money by buying out Cullimore's $1.9-million U.S. deal and Salmalainen's $725,000 rather than dealing with the $3.5 million they owed Samsonov.
The bottom line - and this is why the Canadiens need someone like vice-president (hockey operations) Julien BriseBois who recently added an MBA to his law degree - is that the Canadiens save $479,000 against the cap next year and $411,000 in 2008-09.
