Veteran defenceman Andrei Markov is staying put in Montreal after signing a US$23-million, four-year deal with the Canadiens on Monday.
The 29-year-old Markov was due to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
Markov was fourth in team scoring this season, second among the club's defencemen with six goals and 43 assists in 77 games.
``Andrei Markov is one of our best players, and a huge part of our hockey team,'' Habs GM Bob Gainey said in a release. ``We drafted and developed a player who has become an elite defenceman in the NHL. His desire to remain a member of the Canadiens' organization was evident, and today we are very pleased to have a long-term agreement with Andrei.''
In 411 career games with Montreal, the Russian blue-liner has 46 goals and 161 assists.

Will BG try to sign Souray............should he?
or let him walk and use the $$ to try to land a FA FW?
BG must feel that Markov is the Habs best player and is now paid as such, then comes Koivu at 4.75 and Kovalev at 4.5, where does Souray fit in?

Let Souray walk .. someone will overpay for his one dimensional skillset
I like inking Markov longterm but once again I'm concerned BG has overpaid as he did with Koivu, Kovalev and especially Samsonov

IMO, Markov is our best player. He's a key part of our defense and the team just isn't the same when he's not in the lineup. Bobs priority was to keep Markov......no matter what. He couldn't afford to lose both Markov and Souray to Fa.... As you said, let Sheldon go.

What I would like to see is them go after a guy that can play the #3 spot behind Markov and Komisarek, someone that they can get for around $3 or 4 mil. A guy who can play PP minutes but isn't such a defensive liability. Then go out and get a number one centre. The instant they do that they would be very deep down the middle. A #1 guy combined with Koivu and Plekanec is a good 1-2-3 punch. They have enough young talent to fill out 4 solid lines, They just need someone to rally around, a star player.

There's lots of options out there. Briere, Gomez, Nylander are all UFAs. Then the rumored centermen who are on the trading block, like Richards or Marleau. The Canadiens haven't had a star to rally around since the days of Patrick Roy, and the lack of success since then is pretty obvious.
Maybe Carey Price is the savior...

Gomez would be a cheaper option but without a bonafide sniping winger it's not an ideal move
We need a legit goal scorer.. preferably with some size.. somebody like Ryder only good lol

A rumour going around that the Habs have signed Finnish forward Janne Lahti. Lahti was bound to become a Jokerit player next year and here's what was said of him: Lahti, 24, is one of HPK's own bred. Labeled by many as a failed prospect, the winger struck the headlines during HPK's champioship winning season as he scored three vital goals in the final series' deciding games.
During this season (06-07) Lahti continued where he had begun and earned himself remarkable stats, 20+14=34. In the quarter finals he sunk HPK's first opponents HIFK Helsinki with 6 goals.
Janne is a young guy with great expectations. Here's his hockeydb link: www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php3?pid=62641........still trying to find some confirmation.........if any. Apparently they are negotiating with Lahti's agent but he has not been signed. Lahti is looking for an out clause and the Habs are a little hesitant to give one.
