Can you ask for a more fitting way to end this seasons NHL schedule fo these two clubs Saturday night?
8 MONTREAL GP-81 W-42 Pts-90 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9 TORONTO GP-81 W-39 Pts-89 10 Islanders Gp-80 W-38 Pts-88
Now for the math.......
- A Habs win of any shape (regulation, ot, so) and they clinch. Isles and leafs eliminated.
- Leafs win in OT/SO, Leafs can't catch the Habs anyway due to the wins tie-breaker Montreal owns over Toronto. Montreal is in as the 8th place team, unless the Isles win both games. If that happens, the Isles are in as the 8th place team. If the Isles get 3 points out of 4 in their last 2 games, the Habs are in due to the wins tie-breaker Montreal owns over New York. Basically, the Leafs have to win in regulation I believe.
Bottom line is......Habs win, they're in!

For the Leafs to have any hope they have to win in regulation, a win in OT doesn't do them any good. I was on a Leafs message board earlier and it was being discussed that if they are tied late in regulation do they pull the goalie and an interesting rule was brought up that I hadn't realized was there. Not sure if it would be a factor in the remaining games, but thought it was interesting.
In the regular season if the game goes into OT, both teams are basically awarded one point each at the end of regulation and of course the winner getting the extra point for the win. But if one team decides to pull it's goalie in OT and they get scored upon with the net empty, they lose that point that was awarded to them at the end of regulation and don't get any points for going into OT.

I've never heard of this rule, interesting. I guess you learn something new everyday.

Proves my theory of rules in sports.
The theory being, if you make up a stupid rule, then you're going to have to make up more stupid rules to cover situations that arise as a result of the stupid rule.
So you give a point for losing in OT (stupid rule), now you have to add this rule about you don't get the point if you pull your goalie and get scored upon.
Dumb, dumb, incredibly dumb - JUST DO AWAY WITH THE FRIGGING POINT FOR LOSING, DAMMIT, AND HAVE JUST WINS AND LOSSES, THAT'S WHAT SPORTS IS ALL ABOUT! - Then you wouldn't have to come up with dumb things like this.
Same kind of thing happened in baseball with the designated hitter rule, the ultimate stupid rule....they had to come up with other stupid rules to cover the loopholes.
Anyway, pulling the goalie in OT wouldn't help the Leafs, even if they scored - Habs would get the point for losing, remember, and they have the tie-breaker.
Now I'm getting REALLY steamed!

It may not come into play for the Leafs/Habs game but if the Leafs win in regulation, it is something that Islanders may look at doing in their remaining games

Can't wait until tonight.......just like a game #7!
Hopefully the Habs come out and bury a couple past Raycroft early.......put the Leafs behind the 8-ball fast. One goal lead for the Habs, is a two goal lead.....
Good luck to Max, as I'm sure he's pumped for this one.
Go Lappy.......and Go Habs!

What are you idiots smoking? Don't blame the refs for the Habs folding like a fucking two dollar tent.. blame the fact they played like a giant bag of elk shit most of the year... truth be told they didn't deserve to even be in contention for a playoff spot.. don't even get me started on Kovalev...
Go Isles Go!!

Go Isles Go!! Haha, it's true. I was just really frustrated after the game. Neither team really deserves to be in it, and the Sabres are going to sweep whoever makes it anyway.
