"TORONTO (CP) - All events surrounding the NHL entry draft slated for Ottawa in June will officially be cancelled sometime this week, The Canadian Press has learned.
Sources indicate the annoucement could come as early as Thursday.
The NHL has said repeatedly it would not hold an entry draft unless it had a new collective bargaining agreement in place with the NHL Players' Association.
The cancellation of draft-related events is likely needed because Ottawa-area hotels need advance confirmation of rooms that would have been booked for hundreds of draft hopefuls and their families."
Now, if the draft DOES get cancelled what does it do to players like Grags, Slava and a player like Crosby who are eligible for this years draft?
If there is no draft what are Crosbys options?

I can already see the dollar signs in Crosby's agents eyes If the draft is cancelled it will be up to the team that can afford Sidney. He will have his pick. Must be a nice feeling to be so wanted ;D

Must be a nice feeling to be so wanted ;D Sidney won't be playing in the NHL until he comes in through a draft. He may play in Europe next year ... or even the WHA if it ever got off the ground ... or he could sign a one year deal with an AHL team but they'd have to find some big money to get him.

Is there not a age rule for the AHL, like a age restriction? .....if so what is it? Those agreements between the minor pros ... NHL ... and CHL ... no longer exist as they all expired and have not been renewed. Players played in the AHL this year as 19 yr olds which went against the old rules ... so its not difficult to get around. But again ... I'm not sure an AHL team could afford him ... but maybe money won't matter to him and playing hockey at the pro level for a year (vs the Q) is more important to him. I don't think anybody will stop Crosby from playing wherever he wants to ... most leagues will welcome him with open arms ... and Corteau will have no leg to stand on in trying to uphold a contract he signed with a minor. Once he turns 18 he is not bound by his parents wishes and so anything they signed on his behalf will be virtually null and void and easily defeated in the courts.

so does anyone really know what will happen, i hear some rumours today of a draft of some sort prior to the start of the league(whenever that us?)
what about if they decide to use replacement players and break the union?
i guess there is a lot of ifs and buts...

One potential issue that I hadn't really thought of but an article referred to was that with this new replacement NHL one of the areas that they would heavily recuit from would be 19 & 20 yr olds from the CHL. Meaning that the Q could potentially be losing an additional 10 - 15 of its top players next year in excess of the regular amount that get promoted to the AHL.
If it does happen it should be interesting to see who decides to go. I certainly wouldn't expect all the top players to accept but personally if I were a player in that situation (Drafted or Undrafted) as long as I wasn't a 1st or 2nd round draft pick (ie. very good chance to make the NHL) I think the Replacement NHL would be the best place to catch the attention of NHL GM's & Coaches and hopefully earn a spot in the future. I mean personally I would say F*** the NHLPA, I'm not part of the union and right now they aren't doing much to protect the rookies and bottom guys, so these players don't owe them anything. And don't say that in the future if a roster spot came down to a replacement player and some AHL guy who refused to play the owners or GM's wouldn't favour the replacement player.
Plus to top it all off these guys would be getting a nice pay check next year as opposed to returning to a CHL allowance. And in todays sports doesn't it always come down to the money.

I don't think replacement players is going to be an issue.. the replacement players talk is just to break the union and it will work
