SAINT JOHN, June 15, 2007 – The Saint John Sea Dogs have announced the signing of Jordan Knox, a right wing who put up big numbers in three seasons with the Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Junior “A” Hockey League.
Knox will be filling one of three 20-year-old positions available with the Sea Dogs this coming year.
Five-foot-eight and 180 pounds, Knox was second in scoring with Summerside last year, netting 42 goals and earning 47 assists for 89 points in 53 regular season games. In 164 games played over three years with the Western Capitals, he scored 119 times and earned 137 helpers for 256 points.
“Jordan is going to be a key part of our team,” said Jacques Beaulieu, general manager and head coach of the Sea Dogs. “He had NCAA options, but chose to come to Saint John. He’s going to have an immediate impact for us.”
Beaulieu noted that Knox has shown strong leadership with the Western Capitals, including serving as team captain.
Knox has won a number of awards in the three years he’s played for Summerside, including best defensive forward and most sportsmanlike player. He was named Canadian Junior “A” player of the year in 2005-2006. The magnitude of that award is illustrated by its past winners who include NHLers Dany Heatley and Mike Comrie.
The Sea Dogs open their 2007-2008 regular season on September 13 when they visit the Presidents Cup champions, Lewiston MAINEiacs. Saint John’s home opener is Friday, September 21, when they entertain the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

I thought 20yr olds can't play as a "rookie" in the Q?

Not sure about the rule, but perhaps a bit risky bringing in a 20 yr old who hasn't played in the league considering that spot could be used by someone that has been in the league at least 2 or 3 years. Certainly is unconventional.

Man, they must have been dangling an awful big bag of money to get him to give up hid NCAA eligibilty at this point. I agree. Knox is a good player, but it's a bit of a risk bringing in a 20yr old as a rookie.....but what do they have to lose? It's a step up for sure, but he does have the tools to be a decent player for them, on and off the ice.

As per the Q's administrative rules:
Each team of the League can register and play with three 20 year-old players or players who will have turned 20 by December 31st of the current year, as long as their names were registered on the eligibility list of the team on February 10th of the previous season, except for one of those player whose name could not have been inscribed on that admissibility list.

If he is 20 ... chances are he has missed the boat on NCAA opportunities ... and so he probably gave up his eligibility on that probability. But yes he'd get paid as a 20 yr old also.

Rocket couldn't convince him last year to give up his NCAA options
Good pickup for Saint John.. they get a skilled player at no loss of an aset at all
I think Knox can put up a PPG

I was talking to Jordon at the end of the summer last year and he said he didn't get his NCAA schoolership that he was hoping for. He also said he almost signed with the Wildcats the year they hosted the Memorial Cup. I guess Moncton faxed him some papers to sign but Jordon didn't receive them until after the deadline, I guess that is what you get for waiting for the last minute to sign a player. He was going to join the Wildcats after the Capitals were done of their season. He was thinking of playing in the Q last year but he didn't think any teams would want a 19 year old rookie.

Former Western Capital makes jump to QMJHL JASON SIMMONDS Transcontinental Media
SKINNERS POND — One of the most electrifying players to ever wear a Summerside Western Capitals’ jersey is making the jump to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Jordan Knox, who was team captain last season, confirmed in a phone interview Sunday night from his Skinners Pond home that he will join the Saint John Sea Dogs for the 2007-08 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season. It is Knox’s final year of junior eligibility. “I was thinking of this for some time and I decided a couple of weeks ago,’’ said the 20-year-old Knox, who scored 118 goals, including 53 in 2005-06, and had 255 points in 164 regular-season games over three years with the Capitals in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League. Knox, a five-foot-eight and 180-pound right-winger, is looking forward to the challenges of playing major junior hockey. “It’s going to be something new for me, being on the ice every day,’’ said Knox, who scored 29 power-play and nine short-handed goals in the regular season with the Caps. “I’ve been talking to them a bit and I'm just going to work hard, provide some leadership and hopefully have a good year.’’ During his tenure with the Caps, Knox was the 2005-06 Canadian Junior A Hockey League’s player of the year, he participated in the 2004 prospects game and was a member of Team Atlantic at last year’s world junior challenge in Saskatchewan. He also received academic and sportsmanship awards. “I couldn’t have asked for a better three years,’’ said Knox, who regularly brought fans out of their seats with his blazing speed and highlight-reel goals. “They are a class organization and treated me well!’’

Highly sought after prospect Steven Anthony has opted to join the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).
The signing of the 16-year-old power forward was announced today by Jacques Beaulieu, general manager and head coach of the Sea Dogs. This ends speculation that Anthony would choose NCAA hockey in the United States over major junior hockey.
“This wasn’t easy to get done and we certainly took a risk in drafting Steven,” stated Beaulieu. “But, we felt it was a gamble worth taking because of the character and quality of this young man. There’s no doubt Steven Anthony will develop into one of the premier power forwards in this league. It will be a thrill for fans to watch this NHL prospect develop in Saint John.”
Six-foot-two and 190 pounds, Anthony has been touted as ‘a can’t miss’ prospect because of his size, vision and playmaking ability. Many scouting organizations pegged him as the best available player in the QMJHL entry draft held earlier this month in Drummondville, QC.
Playing Midget AAA for the Dartmouth Subways last year, Anthony finished first on the team with 33 goals, 15 power-play tallies and three short-handed goals enroute to a 64-point season in 35 games. He took it up a notch in the playoffs, recording 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists) in just nine games, before succumbing to injury.
“We were aggressive in obtaining the 10th pick from the Quebec Remparts at the draft which put us in a position to pick Anthony,” noted Beaulieu. “Steven was truly one of the premier players available at the draft and to add him and Simon Despés to the organization, bodes very well for our future. I think you’ll look back to the draft in Drummondville and see it as a turning point for the Sea Dogs. To secure the number one defenceman (Després) and the number one forward (Anthony) was a tremendous coup.”
Wayne Long, president of the Sea Dogs, noted that Anthony and his family visited Saint John last Friday and were “favorably impressed with the city and the depth and quality of the Sea Dogs organization.
“We want to acknowledge and thank Mayor Norm McFarlane for taking the time to meet with the Anthony family,” said Long. “The mayor of our city is a tremendous supporter of major junior hockey and his active interest is very much appreciated.”
Long said the Sea Dogs success at the QMJHL entry draft and the signing last week of free-agent forward Jordan Knox “is creating quite a buzz about the community.
“It’s exciting to see the growing interest in the Sea Dogs, as illustrated by strong season ticket sales,” he said. “Securing Steven Anthony is another key piece of our foundation and we’re not finished yet. These are exciting days for our organization.”
The Sea Dogs open their 2007-2008 regular season on September 13 when they visit the Presidents Cup champions, Lewiston MAINEiacs. Saint John’s home opener is Friday, September 21, when they entertain the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
