Here's a list of the players that the PEI Rocket have chosen in the 2007 QMJHL draft. Round#1#11 overall Brandon MacLean- FW6'00 175lbs NS Regular Season Stats28GP 16G 23A 39Pts 82PIM Playoff Stats:8Gp 6G 4A 10Pts From our friends at HPO:"We were pretty hard on Brandon at the start of the season. There was hype aroud this kid with fantastic hands, and offensive zone smarts that was going to be a top end player in the draft. What we saw was a kid with great hands, an uncanny ability to stick the puck, a great wrist shot, and the slowest feet we had ever seen. My, what a couple months can change! He still does not have the "Rico Fata" speed, bu this skating strenth has come very far. He has more bounce to his first step, so he is much more effective in transition. He still does not pivot that well, but our concerns in this respect are much lesser now, then in November, just because we seen so much improvemene down the stretch. He missed a lot of games due to injury, but he should be a very good Q player." Pic from peirocket.com

Round #2
Brandon Street 5'11½ 160lbs FW NL
Regular Season Stats: 27GP 19G 10A 29Pts 77Pim
Playoff Stats: 5GP 6G 3A 9Pts 6Pim
From our Friends at HPO: "Like so many top end Midgets, Brandon has a knock against him for some lazy tendicies on ice. You cannot however deny his talents. He has good size, and amazing talent in the offenzive zone. He is a very tight passer, and can get passes through a sea of legs and sticks. He is adept in the corners, and has about a 90% battle winning percentage. We loe his shot, but it's his passing abilities that are underrated. His skating is strong but not overly fast. He is very har dto knock off the puck. He is tenacious on the forecheck, and can cause turnovers very well. Attitude wise, he does play with passion, when he knows that it may cause his team to win. Tri-Pen, while a decent young team that works hard is not a high-end team. It is just more noticeable when Brandon takes a game off as compared to Steve Anthony, because he IS Tri-Pens offence. At the CSR tournament he showed his true colors, and he has every skill to be a very good player in the QMJHL."

Round 4 Parker Deighan5'11 175lbs Dman PE Regular Season Stats:50GP 2G 16A 18Pts 107PIM Playoff Stats:17GP 0G 3A 3Pts 10PIM From our friends at HPO:"Parker is a very good skater who is not afraid of carrying the puck. He is very difficult to beat 1 on 1, and he will take on any opponent that comes his way. Positionally, he is very strong in his own end, and well placed at the point for a shot or a pass. Parker is very confident. He will challenge the best forwards and he will come out on top often. He is very strong on his skates, and very mobile, moving forwards or backwards. He is very skilled with the puck, and looks like a "Wade Redden" type player. His season at Notre Dame did great things for his skill development, and his year in Junior A did great things for his confidence. He will be a very solid Q player."

Tanner Manson6'02 190lbs FW NS Regular Season Stats:35GP 2G 8A 10Pts 68PIM Playoff Stats:5Gp 0G 1A 1Pts 4PIM From Our friends at HPO:"The third Manson boy to come through the system, and he is he most complete at 15. Where it took Triston and Anton awhile to grow into their bodies, Tanner is strong right now. He is very physical and very confident. He is a beast in the corners and along the boards and has a great drive for the net. His puck skill aren't fantastic, but he makes simple plays that usually work out nicely. He brings a lot of energy to the ice, and he was rewarded late into the season with more ice time. Teams are always looking for more toughness, and Tanenr brings that, and the possibilty of so much more" www.macs.goalline.ca/player_profile.php?player_id=48504&team_id=1922

From our friends at HPO: "Sam is the younger brother of former QMJHL players Sebastian and Simon. He is cut from the same mold as his brothers: gritty and intense. Sammy has enough skills to make it at the QMJHL level, but he won't make a roster for his hands or vision, it will be for his intense play and work ethic."

Overall at first glance I am pretty satisfied with the Rocket’s draft this year. I think the team filled their needs and here are a couple of my preliminary thoughts on the guys they got.
Disclaimer: I am not trying to pull a cbtitan and pencil guys in as future stars. We will all have to see them in training camp and during the season just wanted to share some comments based on what I have seen/read/heard.
1st Round (11th overall) Brandon MacLean Wasn’t the player that I was expecting the Rocket to get but by the sounds of it he has the potential to be goal scoring powerforward in the future which is exactly what I think we need.
2nd Round (27th overall) Brandon Street I was expecting Street to go higher. Sounds like we may have added another potentially strong goal scoring winger and someone I talked to before the draft compared him a little to Walker. In that he has great offensive talent with high potential but needs to round out his game, here’s hoping his offensive game develops into that kind of production.
4th Round (61st overall) Parker Deighan Was actually ranked as a potential 2nd rounder although IMO that was too high around mid 3rd/4th is probably a good spot. After seeing him play my opinion of Deighan is that he has a more poslished game than most of his peers but he may not necessarily have the high end potential that higher drafted defense have. Having said that he is a great skater seems to be a smart player and certainly capable of being a solid defenseman in the Q and a good pick in the 4th round Islander or not. With the defense we already have another year of regular icetime in Jr A would probably be best. Although being so close I think it would be nice if Deighan got a few callups during the year.
4th Round (65th overall) Sebastien Gingras Nothing wrong with going off board in this range. According to CSR he was identified as a potential pick and according to CSR he is 6’00 approx 170 and played Midget Espoir which might be one reason what he wasn’t rated higher. Worth noting I think he played for the same team Southorn did last season. Looking forward to learning more about him.
5th Round (83rd overall) Tanner Manson Sounds like exactly the type of player I hoped we would add at this point in the draft a big strong player who can hit. Hopefully he has a little more talent than his older brother and can become a future 3rd liner for us.
5th Round (87th overall) Jon Waye I liked that we used a 5th round pick to grab a 16 yr old goalie. Don’t know much about Waye but he is 6’2 and was ranked in the 4th round. What’s interesting is his teammate Allen was ranked in the same range but taken 40th overall by SJN.
6th Round (101st overall) Samuel Courcelles The younger brother of Simon and if he is a similar style player he could become a very good 2-way player for us in the future.
8th Round (142nd) Mike Snow I have seen Snow play a couple of times and I think this pick could turn out to be a very good one. Snow is small (5’09) but a terrific skater, good puck mover and very smart. He stood out in the games I saw him play and may be the kind of guy that could be a 7th defenseman already although I am sure another year in Jr A wouldn’t hurt.
9th Round (155th) Nathan Desroches Even though he has good offensive skill I don’t think Nathan will ever play in the Q because he is too soft although there is nothing wrong with grabbing him mid-9th round.
Anyway just some preliminary thoughts and if anyone has any additional comments/opinions or whatever to share I would be really interested in them. Especially Lala who is always a great resource at the draft.

No game breakers, but lots of solid players available. MacLean will surprise people, and Street could make this team next season. Overall a pretty good draft......considering.

Tallking to some local kids last night and they are sying that Desroches was glad to be drafted, but not toohappy it was the Rocket. Also Deighan is not real happy about being taken by the Rocket, he told people that they don't have room for D. Not sure why the team took two goalies, may be the new coach knows something. Thought the Rocket should have taken local tough guy Big William Johnston, but Shawinigan scooped him up.

section8, I can understand why some of these guys are skeptical at being drafted by the Rocket. I would think that they saw how the other "local" players faired out and it wasn't so great. These players want to get the chance to show their stuff and get the development needed to improve their play. Brandon MacLean out of Dartmouth watched the Stephen Lund saga unfold. Maybe it was personality conflict, favortism, whatever but Lund was the Rocket #1 pick and he doesn't play for them anymore. In Lund's case it could have been just him.

Not a bad player but as I said I don't see him ever playing in this league. As for Deighan I don't know him but I bet the fact that he was expecting to be a 2nd round pick and fell to mid 4th round is probably what bother him the most. And forget the fact it is the Rocket the team that drafted him already has 6 defensemen set plus likely Owens who played a few games in the Q last season. I am sure that deighan wants to play in the Q next season but making the Rocket is not going to be easy.
