After years of talk, planning and meetings, work on the Peter Pan intersection begins today.
The new intersection will be fed traffic by Malpeque Road, Spencer Lane, University Avenue and the Trans-Canada Highway.
There will also be bypasses built in so if, for example, traffic is coming in from Cornwall, they can bypass the lights via a new slip lane that leads to the Charlottetown Mall/Canadian Tire intersection.
The intersection will feature three lanes feeding into the lights from the Malpeque Road and Trans-Canada Highway — two going straight and one for vehicles turning.
Coming from University Avenue, there will be three lanes — one lane for vehicles going straight and two for left-turning motorists.
Malpeque Road itself is being widened to allow the city to install a dedicated lane for vehicles turning left on to Irwin Drive.
Curbs will be built along University Avenue in front of businesses like Ultramar, Boston Pizza, Peter Pan, Subway and Shoppers Drug Mart. The idea here is to control access to the businesses, making it safer to enter and exit.
“The Ultramar, for example, it’s (wide) open now, you can just pull in anywhere,’’ Bernard said, referring to access off University Avenue. “There will be some curbing put in, (each) business will have its own entrance and own exit, similar to Boston Pizza.’’

It's amazing how many years it takes to finally plan and put something together in the province, especially in the City of Charlottetown. With all the new buildings that have been put up in the past few months there, moving the intersection down further is probably the best decision that they made.
