Sperm whale stranded on north shoreCBC NewsConservation officials from the federal and provincial governments have decided to leave a stranded sperm whale off Dalvay on P.E.I.'s north shore, and hope for the best. The whale is stuck on sand in about two metres of water about 200 metres off the coast. The prognosis for the whale is poor. It has been stuck since late Wednesday night and is likely suffering from damage to its internal organs caused by its own weight on the sand bar. Officials from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and doctors from the Atlantic Veterinary College have decided to see if the whale can free itself on the next high tide. They are concerned if they attempt to tow the whale to deeper water they will damage its tail, giving it no chance of survival at all. The whale, which is about 12 metres long, has several fresh scars that may be from fishing gear. Sperm whales generally inhabit deep water, which makes this stranding very unusual.
