“Survivor” scofflaw Richard Hatch was sent down for more than four years in a federal court in Providence yesterday for failing to pay taxes on his $1 million prize and other income. U.S. District Judge Ernest Torres said he expected to sentence the 45-year-old Newport resident to 33 to 41 months, but he instead opted for a harsher sentence for the “Survivor” because portions of Hatch’s testimony defied logic and were “inherently incredible.” “There’s no nice way to say it: Mr. Hatch lied,” Torres said, later adding that the reality show star’s failure to tell the truth fueled the tougher sentence.
In addition to the $1 million he won from CBS, Hatch was convicted of evading taxes on $327,000 he earned as co-host of the late, lamented Star 93.7 radio show and $28,000 in rent on property he owned.
His attorney, Michael Minns, said Hatch will appeal. In addition to the 51 months of prison time, the judge sentenced Hatch to three years of supervised release and ordered him to pay taxes still owed for 2000 and 2001 and to undergo counseling. He has been held since his conviction because Torres said he was a flight risk. The Bureau of Prisons will decide later where he will serve his term.

A funny thing on the Survivor finale this week. Jeff Probst told the winner. "First thing, you have to do is make sure you pay your taxes."
