Blue Jackets trade Islander to Bruins Defenceman Adam McQuaid is excited over the move The Guardian
Just days after completing his junior hockey eligibility with the Sudbury Wolves, Islander Adam McQuaid is on the move.
The 20-year-old Cornwall native, drafted 55th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2005, was dealt Wednesday to the Boston Bruins.
“I’m pretty excited,” said McQuaid, from Sudbury. “There is a lot of tradition in that organization.”
The defenceman, off a 31-point season with the Ontario Hockey League club, was acquired by the Bruins for a fifth-round selection at the NHL Entry Draft to be held June 22-23 in Columbus.
He learned Tuesday of the deal, which wasn’t made official until Wednesday morning by the Bruins and Blue Jacket interim general manager Jim Clark of Summerside.
“It’s the business side of the sport,” said McQuaid. “I had kind of envisioned myself playing in Columbus . . . It’s a fresh start with Boston and I’m really looking forward to it.”
McQuaid spoke briefly with Boston general manager Peter Chiarelli earlier in the day.
The Bruins were impressed with McQuaid’s development this season.
“He has size, strength, a good hockey sense and he is a good defender,” said Chiarelli, in a statement on the Bruins’ website, which also confirmed they had signed the Islander to a multi-year contract.
“We felt that the draft was thinner than usual in the lower rounds and that this was a good way to get value with a lower-round pick.”
McQuaid finished his junior career with 18 goals and 58 assists in 246 games, all with Sudbury.
The Wolves advanced to the OHL final before bowing out in six games to Memorial Cup-bound Plymouth Whalers.
“It would have been nice to still be playing,” said McQuaid. “The city up here was amazing. The support we had was unbelievable.”
The Wolves entered the post-season as a sixth seed but got on a roll and stayed there.
“We weren’t favoured to win any of the series,” said McQuaid.
“We kind of just believed in ourselves. We took one game at a time and we were able to make a good run.”
The blue-liner expects to leave Sudbury Friday for the Island.
“So many things happened in a short period of time, I have to take some time to sit back and reflect on it,” he said.
“When we got put out there was lots going on here, trying to get the season wrapped up with our banquet, the trade and trying to get a contract.”
He plans on taking the next couple of weeks to relax and “take it all in”.

trading a 2nd round pick for a 5th ... that's the sort of move that will get Mr Clark off the short list of possible GM candidates in Columbus
