tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=201924&hubname=Looks like Serge Sr. is against fighting in the NHL according to this article. With all the injuries in fights the last couple weeks a lot of people are getting into the debate that fighting doesn't belong. I have seen the debates on OTR and various other sports news shows. So, what do the people on rockettalk think now? Should fighting stay or go? Obviously it can never be completely eliminated but should there be harsher penalties? What would happen if for the majority fighting was taken out as far as stick work and cheap shots go? Discuss....

Harry Houdini is going to love those comments.
As I've said before, fighting for the sake of fighting (staged fights between goons) should be eliminated. Fighting to protect teammates is part of the game and should stay. Simple as that for me.

So what do you propose Krang to take out staged fighting between goons?

If it was simple to just get rid of them that would be a good solution, but some of them can actually play.

Well then they should actually play.
It's pretty obvious when it's a staged fight, so whenever that happens suspend both players. When it's a heat of the moment deal just let it go. If that happens the goon will be a thing of the past.

If that happens the goon will be a thing of the past. Other sports don't tolerate fighting. Therefore, there's no good reason for hockey to not only tolerate, but actually promote it - the reasons expounded in favor of fighting in hockey make no sense whatsoever. Fighting in hockey isn't "part of the game" - it's just part of the stupidity that, unfortunately, seems to go with hockey at all levels. Nuff said - I'm not wasting any more time on this.

I have no problem with heat of the moment or spur of the moment fights, but I don't care for the way they stage them nowadays. Hockey is a fast, hard hitting game where emotions tend to run high at times and I would rather see 2 guys whose emotions get the better of them settle it with their fists rather than settle it using their sticks on one another.

I don't think it's fair to compare hockey to other sports. There are plenty of things that go on in other sports that you don't see in hockey as well. Sports should have differences that make them unique. Fighting is something that makes hockey unique. There are lots of reasons why fighting comes about in hockey, a lot of things that wingman mentioned. It's a fast, hard hitting, tight checking game that leads to frustration and anger, and at times that boils over. Especially when a teammate's health is put in jeopardy. If someone attempts to injure a teammate and no one does anything about it, I would be ashamed of the rest of the team. It's then that fighting should be OK. Otherwise I'll stick with the UFC for my staged fights.
