New York Islanders forward Chris Simon has been suspended indefinitely without pay, pending a hearing, for slashing New York Rangers forward Ryan Hellweg in the face. Hollweg was felled by Simon late in the third period Thursday night when the Simon angrily charged him and nailed him with a clothesline hit with his stick. Simon was ejected after the slash and slapped with a match penalty for deliberate attempt to injure. "I didn't really have time to react to it," Hollweg said. "It's scary to your health but in the back of my mind I couldn't believe he did it." video of slash youtube.com/watch?v=Ht6RyAI9370

simon is done for this year,, no doubt. BUT,,,, the guy that ran him dead from behind, head first should be suspended also. deliberite hitin the back, we are ttrying to teach our kids to notnhit from behind, and that hit on simon was a brutal hit, no question or debate. not excusing what simon did, but, brutal cheap shot.

Finding this action brutal, while suggesting awhile back what Bertuzzi did was acceptable.

Simon was checked from the side. His actions have no place in hockey although I can understand what was feeling (it hurt)Gotta control your emotions, should have dropped his stick and cracked him. Can't be using your stick like an axe

Simon is also a UFA at seasons end.. he has a history of discipline problems and his role in todays game is dying out.. I don't expect Chris Simon to play another game in the NHL period
Too bad to because for a goon he actually had some talent.. could score some goals.. but has never been able to stick with a team longterm because he has such a short fuse and so much baggage.. screwed up his last shot given to him by his buddy Teddy TearDrops

"his role in todays game is dying out" thats too bad. Hockey of today is also tiring me out. Too many penalties, can't hit any more, no fighting etc. etc. etc. I think if you look around attendence is dropping allmost everywhere. Thank god for the allmighty Americans for fixing OUR game.

Finding this action brutal, while suggesting awhile back what Bertuzzi did was acceptable. You are Wrong on that one.. Due to the fact that bertuzzi's was a cheap shot also however they differ Huge time one is with a stick and the other with a hand. bertuzzi was trying to get Moore to fight and he wouldn't fight so berts says OK i will get u my self type deal and grabs him from behind how ever the difference is that even though they were both cheap and brutal Simon used his stick as a weapon and used it good where berts just kinda wanted to fight and just got the emotions better of him Simon could have easily dropped the stick and the gloves and just pounded him. But no he uses his stick Thats 10 times as brutal as what berts did. The Thing is Moore got hurt a lot worse thats why people think this isn't such a big deal cause buddy got up.. Thats where people are getting confused on this whole thing Berts cheap shot Moore inj Simmons cheap shot did not inj.. IMO Simmons cheap shot is the worst as it gets...

I agree with Junior - in part.
Simon's offence was the worst I've seen in the NHL - worse than McSorley, worse than Bertuzzi.
Only similar thing I've seen was that AHL slash to the head a couple of years ago - Russian player, I think it was....happened right in front of the net, think it was Hamilton playing.

very little similar between those two incidents either scroogey
that AHL incident was a puck battle in front of the net wit one player on his knees... was still vicious and ugly but not to the extent of Simon turning around and basically decapitating the player who hit him.. nowhere near the play

Oh, don't get me wrong, Simon's slash WAS the worst I've seen recently.
Still, it reminded me of that AHL slash - same kind of thing, except worse, because Simon had more time to react than that Russian player did.
The absolute worst EVER was Wayne Maki's two-hander over Ted Green's head, fracturing his skull - in a 1969 exhibition game in Ottawa, of all things!
This occurred after a stick-swinging fight, one of only two I've ever seen - the other one involved Eddie Shack and Larry Zeidel of Philadelphia, around the same time - scary stuff.
Green had an epidural hematoma when he arrived at our hospital 40 minutes later - he was conscious but drowsy, and taken to the OR within 30 minutes, where the blood compressing the brain was removed, and a plate inserted.
He remained in hospital for another 4 months, partially paralyzed but gradually improving throughout.
Nothing could top that.
In my opinion, Maki should have been banned for life at that time, just as Simon should be banned for life right now - nothing else is enough.
