The Allan Cup hosted by the Lloydminster Border Kings, consists of the Ontario-champion Thunder Bay Bombers, the Midwest Islanders of Saskatchewan, the Can-Am Cobras from New Brunswick, the B.C-Alberta champion Horse Lake Thunder the Montmagny Sentinelles from Quebec.
Theo Fleury and Gino Odjick play for Horse Lake.
The Cobras, representing Atlantic Canada, play Lloydminster on Tuesday night.
"We're certainly not one of the favourites but you take it one game at a time and anything can happen," said Cobras coach Meryl Stewart. "If we can keep games close and get good goaltending . . . "
The Cobras have zip up front in former AHLer Jeff Bateman and Miguel Delisle, who once had a 95-point junior season with the Ottawa 67's. Pat Cloutier, Eric Bissonnette and Tom Beaton have been on teams that have won the Allan Cup. Aaron Tozer will get the start in goal, says Stewart.
"We're not in the budget range of Horse Lake and some other teams but we're going out there to give it our best," he said.
Lloydminster's lineup includes veteran defencemen Ray Nielsen and Merv Mann, former Maple Leafs prospect Mark Deyell, and Bart Redden, the brother of Ottawa Senators defenceman Wade Redden.
The Border Kings, who as hosts got an automatic berth, won the Allan Cup four years ago in Sarnia, Ont., when goaltender Jason Clague was named tournament MVP. Clague returns to try and do it again.
"We've had a few weeks off, which has been good for guys who were hurting," says Buchanan. "It could be very beneficial."
On Wednesday, the Montmagny Sentinelles of Quebec take on Thunder Bay in the afternoon game.
The Sentinelles roster includes former QMJHL teammates Hugo Veilleux, Sebastien Bety and Patrick Gingras.
Horse Lake, with Fleury and Odjick, play Lloydminster on Wednesday night.
There are no live national TV broadcasts.
