Sounds promising and time will tell whether he can play here the way he did in Europe. One concern is his size, but it sounds like he plays bigger than his size which should help him make the transition from a European style of hockey to the North American game that is played here. But either way we shouldn't be hoping or expecting too much from him right away like Skorynk a couple of years ago. It might take until at least Xmas before he is able to adjust and be comfortable enough with the on ice game but also to life off the ice, but I think having Latal around will be a big help with that.

Here's a quote from a poster off of HF boards. "I have seen Kana play, he is something like a David Krejci, very good player, gritty and plays bigger than he is, two way player, gives it his all, and has very good offensive ability. PEI fans will love him, myself I think he might be a little bigger than 5'7...I found he looked 5'9ish"

Sounds like my kind of player! But hopefully he will bring some of that offensive skill we need. Solid pick in my books...

Whats the deal with Moncton passing on the 45th pick? Why wouldn't they coose someone...and if not...at least trade the selection away and get something for it?

Any thoughts on the fact that they went after a '90 born? Kana could be added as another talented 17yr old.......to go along with Clow, Doyle, Southorn, Mosher and Malouin......and also Deighan.

Seeing as they apparently have some holes to fill to be a contender, my guess is that they are not going for it this year, but perhaps looking to next...which is kind of sad

I'd imagine it's going to be a wait and see this year. Come Christmas time if it looks like we're a player or two away from contending then they might go for it. If Halifax or Lewy or whomever are miles ahead of us by Christmas, then I can see them selling off a few of their veterans for some help down the road.

I suspect you are right Krang. IMO though, if they are waiting until Christmas to decide if they are going for a championship...they've missed the boat. I would prefer to see the big moves before the season begins, and fill in any little holes at Christmas. Its much harder to score the big impact guys later than it is now

Of course it is, and other teams GMs know that. That's why they won't pull the trigger on deals unless they get midseason value for their players because they know they'll get that value later on. They're smart enough to hold off for more pay out when teams are desperate to make themselves championship worthy.

They're smart enough to hold off for more pay out when teams are desperate to make themselves championship worthy. That's one of the reasons the Marchand deal never got done...VD knows they can get at least that at midseason...plus they benefit in the standings and box office from a star player. Using the current system you guys will always be mid pack...by the time Doyle is a star, Walker Laliberte Latal Morrison Gragnani Lessard and possibly afleur will all have moved on.

Timo’s Town Fog Devils get their man between the pipes
Matthew Ryder fogdevils.com
After a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, the St. John’s Fog Devils have their man between the pipes, and they couldn’t be happier. Timo Pielmeier, the native of Deggendorf, Germany taken 12th overall by the Foggies in the 2007 CHL Import Draft has agreed to join the team for the upcoming season.
“Elated,” said governor Brad Dobbin when asked how he felt about having a potential star goaltender in the fold for 2007-08. “The fact that other teams passed by him even though he probably should have been a top-five pick was blessing enough, but to lock him up and know he wants to be a Fog Devil is as good a feeling as I’ve had since we started [the franchise].”
The news of Pielmeier’s decision was conveyed via an email on Monday, in which the young stopper informed head coach and general manager Real Paiement, as well as Dobbin, that he would indeed be joining the Fog Devils. After a summer that saw him selected 83rd overall by the San Jose Sharks prior to being taken in the Import Draft, Pielmeier decided that the next step in his career would be in St. John’s.
“We weren’t so sure, Timo was very cordial and polite the whole time he was visiting but we still had no idea whether or not he wanted to make St. John’s his home. He did, and it’s great because we know we have a keeper here who could be one of the best in the league and we can’t wait to see him progress here with us,” said Dobbin.
Paiement was quite pleased with Pielmeier’s decision as well, sharing Dobbin’s views that the acquisition could prove to be a big one:
“We’re obviously very happy to have Timo in the organization. It’s going to make our team stronger, our organization stronger, and it’s going to improve the competition in our training camp and help players push themselves to the next level.”
While the Pielmeier news is as good as it gets for the franchise, Paiement was also very appreciative to all those who helped get the deal done along the way:
“There are a lot of people to thank for bringing Timo here. Berlin’s GM Peter John Lee was very helpful, the entire San Jose organization helped us, and his agents, Roland Thompson (North America) and Michael Buehler (Germany) did a lot of help out. We’re extremely grateful for the confidence they’ve shown in the Fog Devils organization.”
The next step in the Timo Pielmeier saga will be when the newest Fog Devil joins the club in approximately three weeks for training camp. Clearly, with the talented keeper ready to lead the team in 2007-08, both the organization and fans alike are waiting to see just how high the Fog Devils can go in the upcoming campaign.
