ST. JOHN'S, NL, May 20, 2007 - The St. John’s Fog Devils will be placing a bid with the Canadian Hockey League to host the 2009 Memorial Cup, the national major junior championship.
When contacted by hockeyscene.com Fog Devils governor Brad Dobbin confirmed that the Fog Devils in conjunction with Destination St. John’s and the City of St. John’s will place the bid.
Dobbin also went on to say that the tournament will not be awarded until May 2008, and that they expect Shawinigan, Chicoutimi, and Rimouski to also bid. The former three have expressed the most interest. Shawinigan expects to have a new building by then, and Rimouski is renovating their facility in time for a bid. He also said that he would expect Gatineau to bid as well if plans for their new building go ahead.
The 2007 Memorial Cup is now being held in Vancouver, BC while the 2008 event with be held in Kitchener, Ontario. The 2006 Mem Cup was held in Moncton.

Given that Moncton had the last one I expect the next Memorial Cup will be in Quebec.
The new rink in Shawinigan makes a lot of sense but Rimouski has tremendous financial resources, fan support and already has the prospects with the potential to be a dominant team by then.

Bet on Chicoutimi...they have a good sized rink and were pretty much promised it after Moncton got it.

I hope so! If Chicoutimi hosts the 2009 Memorial Cup, I don't know about you guys but I plan on going. I'd love to be a part of that legendary crazy fanbase ;D......... I just hope they don't have to tone it down for the Sportsnet cameras. To start, I'd attend games in full Indian headdress......... in support of former Sagueneen Francis Verreault of course.
