I think Southorn is capable of being on the second pairing, but whether he woud be ready for it is another question.
Going into last season the same was being said about Lund and we saw what happened with him. With it being his draft year and all, I think he put alot of pressure and expectation on himself to be a top player, the fans were expecting alot of him and the Rocket seemed to be expecting alot of him. Before the season started there was an article written that Lund could be a top 10 pick in the upcoming NHL draft and I think Savard made a huge mistake by pointing it out to Lund.
I'm not saying what happened to Lund will happen to Southorn, but before the season started people had big expectations for Lund and they shouldn't be doing the same for Southorn this season. Let the kid develop and play at a level and an expectation that he is comfortable at before putting him out of his element. If he is able to play his way onto the top 2 pairings, that is great but he shouldn't be penciled in with an expectation that he or may not be quite ready for.

I have no beef with Gervais. I just think that the only reason Southorn was not ahead of him last season was because he was a 16 year old. I agree with Krang that Southorn was indeed one of the top D on the team many nights and IMO was consistently better than Gervais. Gervais really is an average skater at best, and that is why I don't think his top 4 status is a lock. At any rate...there HAS to be a 17 year old in the top 4.

I can't even consider a Southorn and Lund comparison without laughing. They're not even close to the same type of player. Though they both play defence their styles are completely different. Also, Southorn at 16 was miles ahead of where Lund was at 16.
Just because some people seemed to think Lund was ready for a big improvement in year 2 doesn't mean everyone was expecting it. I didn't see anything nearly as impressive from Lund when he was 16 as I did from Southorn when he was 16. That's why my expectations are higher for Southorn then they were for Lund, and I can't understand how so many people made the mistake of expecting such big things from Lund.

Lund played well as a 16 year old, I agree that Southorn was a better player at 16 than Lund was and there is no comparison skill wise and style. High expectations from people, justifiable or not, I think had an effect on Lund and I would hate to see it happen to Southorn too.

Gervais is not a great skater but he brings an element that our d sorely lacks in toughness... he will definitely be top 4 and should be
as for Southorn , as I said I think he will be great but comparing him to anyone (be it Lund going into last year, Gragnani or Kevin Marshall) is unfair IMO.. and I don't have a problem with him being a 4-5 guy this year but you already have him pegged in on the top pairing.. to me that's a huge gamble and a sign we are again not looking to compete.. not a good message to continously send to your fans

I beleive that Southorn should be given the chance to be part of a top defensive pairing. How are you sposed to help a player grow by not putting him in tough situations and/or important situations. Last season he played great, and then in the playoffs the only he seen was the pine.Face it, last season was his first test and he nailed it!.. Why not put him on the top pairing? I would say that being paired with possibly Lessard would be the best thing for his confidence and growth.I hope that he starts the season on the top pairing, As once said before was one of our best when he seen the ice last season. I dont think it would hurt at all starting in the top to....if things dont pan out...drop him down.....

I don't know what the problem would be having a 17 year old at #2-#4 on the depth chart. Look at Lewiston last season. They had Kevin Marshall in that part of the depth chart and they didn't have any trouble contending. It could be argued that Southorn was our best defenceman for stretches last season, including Game 1 of the playoffs. Southorn has as much talent as Marshall in my opinion and I think he'll be very able playing those kinds of minutes. It's great to have a 17 year old step up and have a big year like Marshall did...but I find it pretty risky to just expect it to happen.

I agree with Krang, I don't really expect it to happen with the way Jean coaches.... what I'm saying is....he deserves the chance and I think everyone would agree with that....just some do not want to give him that chance because they are scared he will fail. But if he does fail,he will learn from it and that will build a better hockey player.... so If it was my choice, I would start him as 1 of my top 3 defensemen and on the first pairing and see how he does....just to give him the chance to succeed and/or fail.... I mean someone has to fill the giant void left by Boutin...ahaha.

Does anyone have any inside info on whether PEI will trade up for the Euro draft......or maybe who they are looking to select?
