A rumour going around that the Habs have signed Finnish forward Janne Lahti. Lahti was bound to become a Jokerit player next year and here's what was said of him: Lahti, 24, is one of HPK's own bred. Labeled by many as a failed prospect, the winger struck the headlines during HPK's champioship winning season as he scored three vital goals in the final series' deciding games.
During this season (06-07) Lahti continued where he had begun and earned himself remarkable stats, 20+14=34. In the quarter finals he sunk HPK's first opponents HIFK Helsinki with 6 goals.
Janne is a young guy with great expectations. Here's his hockeydb link: www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php3?pid=62641........still trying to find some confirmation.........if any. Apparently they are negotiating with Lahti's agent but he has not been signed. Lahti is looking for an out clause and the Habs are a little hesitant to give one. La Presse writes this morning that the Habs are interested to sign Lathi to a contract: www.cyberpresse.ca/article/20...128/CPSPORTS01""He's a big winger (6'2, 200 pounds), that's able to score goals", said Timo Kunnari, journalist from the daily newspaper Italehti. He had great playoffs this year, finishing first in scoring with eight goals in nine games, even if his team was eliminated in the semi-finals. "Another observer who watched him play in Finland said Lahti is quick and plays a physical game well suited to North America. He's great at protecting the puck along the boards when he's in the other team's end. "He reminds me a bit of Erik Cole, even if he's not Erik Cole."

Habs aquire/sign Ryan Russell and Janne Lahti. www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/230173.htmlHabs got Russell for a 7th rd pick today. Some info on Russell: www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/9679Ryan Russell, C Team: Kootenay Ice (WHL) Acquired: Draft, 7th round, 207th overall, 2005 Ryan Russell, a 2005 draft pick, must be signed to an NHL contract by next week or the Rangers will lose his rights. A smaller player, who is an excellent playmaker, with good instincts, Russell is certain to be a very good professional player. The question still is whether or not he can play at the NHL level. That said, he had a very solid season with the Kootenay Ice in 2006-07. Russell, the team captain, was the team's second leading scorer during the regular season, posting 76 points (30 goals, 46 assists) in 58 games, while accumulating 40 PIM, and maintaining a +24 plus/minus rating. Russell continued to shine in the playoffs, where he recorded nine points in seven games (2 PIM, +6). Recently named the Ice fan-favorite player for 2006-07, Russell also received an award for community service, and an award voted on by his teammates. Additionally, Russell participated in the annual ADT Canada/Russia Challenge last fall, scoring a goal in the second game. "Russell, 20, appeared in 58 games with the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League (WHL) this season, registering 30 goals and 46 assists for 76 points, along with 40 penalty minutes. In seven postseason games, he collected three goals and six assists, along with two penalty minutes. The 5-10, 165-pound center has skated in 263 career games with Kootenay (WHL), totaling 98 goals and 118 assists for 216 points, along with 115 penalty minutes. Russell was originally a seventh round selection of the Rangers, 211th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft." www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php3?pid%5B%5D=73435

Also, I heard that the cap is going up to somewhere between $50-$52 million this year, so there should be lots of room to sign 2 or 3 key free agents. A number one center, a scoring winger and a #3-4 defenceman. Do it BG!

Halak showed last season that he can play at this level.....but you can't go with Price and Halak. 1 year of Huet and Halak.......then Price/Halak the next?

Buy out Samsonov for sure
Forget Briere.. go bigger
Agreed start the year with Huet/Halak.. if Price continues his progression next year look to deal Huet at the deadline
We don't need a 3-4 dman.. we already have several.. we need a legit top 2 guy to go with Markov (who is ideally a 1B or 2A guy)
easier said than done... re signing solid free agents.. players seem to be staying away from Montreal in droves

Briere will cost about $6.5 million per year. Gomez or Drury probably a bit more, around $7 for either. I would guess that Briere is the Canadiens' target right now. There isn't really a need to rush Price, so I think he'll probably start the year in the AHL next season. We'll have to wait and see how training camp ends up. They have Huet signed until the end of the season and Gainey said Price wouldn't be their unless he was the number 1 guy, not sitting on the bench, so they might as well let Huet play out his contract. They have a lot of depth in net right now, and they might be able to part with Halak in a trade this summer. Lots of teams are looking for goaltending help and although he may not be a number 1 guy just yet, he could be really good in a platoon system. Then the Habs could just have Danis as a backup to Huet for this season and bring Price in next year. Abby is an afterthought. He'll be gone for sure.

Danis already reached the bigs and recorded a shutout in his very first start
Not sure how you figure Briere will cost less than Gomez or Drury... Briere is coming off a 90 point season.... he will be the most expensive of the 3...

There's no evidence yet that he can, but if he stays healthy then trading Halak isn't a big deal. He kinda reminds me of Vokoun a bit. Coming up through the Montreal system at the wrong time when there was another goaltending prospect with better upside (Theodore in Vokoun's case, Price in Halak's). He may go on to have a good career with another team, but not with the Habs. No reason not to trade him when his stock is at the highest.

Gomez and Drury are both proven playoff scorers. Briere hasn't shown that yet, and hurt his stock further this year especially during the Ottawa series.

Danis would also have to compete against Michael Leighton next season as well............no? Goalies39 Cristobal Huet 41 Jaroslav Halak 31 Carey Price 49 Michael Leighton 75 Yann Danis Nothing against Danis, he just fell down the depth chart. He really doesn't have a NHL shot if he stays with us. Expect BG to trade him, or let him go. Is he not a UFA or a RFA? I really like Halak.....and the comparison to Vokoun is what came to my mind as well. I think we can agree that Price is the #1 in waiting...... So, who does BG lose when Price is ready to step up? Can't see Huet going back to the bench..... Price/Halak combo in '08/'09?
