I remember hearing a bunch about this a few years ago but for those who don't the Lewiston writer posted a very good summary of how PEI almost got Sherbrook's team (now in Lewiston) instead of Montreal's.

It's an interesting read.

I think at the time a lot of hockey fans were disappointed. We came close that time to getting a team and actually thought we were until the murphys screwed that up, of course they wouldn't want a q team on the island.
But in the end we ended up with a team, which has been great ever since and I for one am happy that Montrel moved the team here.

Just a few observations. How can you have a signed lease with the CCC without the boards' approval in the first place. But the big question, what city councillor lost his seat in the election over this, since no one that I know was even aware that there had been any kind of negotiations.

Arena leases are negotiated with rink managers and then must be approved by the governing board of the facility in order to get ratified.
The lease the Castors signed was an agreement pending the governing boards approval, which didn't happen.

That was a scandalous situation altogether. We were all set for the Castors (featuring local Drew MacIntyre) then at the last minute, the rug was pulled out from under. Many people in the decision making process seemed to be unable to give good, clear answers as to why Ch'town would actually say no to a prospective Q team. It wasn't long before S'side was on board and for a the summer it looked like we'd have Q in their yet to be built facility. But, as was mentioned, the logistics of it all didn't work out.... the yet to be built facility is still yet to be finished now in 2006.
2002-03 was not a normal year for the Murphy's and the Abbies. Of course the fact that Ch'town and the Abbies were hosting the Royal Bank Cup in '03 was a huge factor with those involved in making the decisions.
Saying "no thanks" like that was a risky thing for the city to do and we are fortunate that things worked out as nicely as they did. I can't imagine Charlottetown's reputation with the Q governors was to good after that.
Oddly enough, the Royal Bank Cup was a disaster on the ice for the Abbies that year. They were the first team eliminated and seemed to suffer mostly from a lack of heart. They were a strong regular season team who coasted through the playoffs but had face no adversity and struggled in the intense competition of the RBC. Nothing like the Abbies team of '99 that hosted and won the Fred Page Cup.
While on the topic, do folks remember when the Titan were rumored to be considering Charlottetown as a possible destination for relocation from Laval. In retrospect, it's obvious that LGM just used Charlottetown as a pawn to get what the wanted from Bathurst in terms of an agreement. Bathust has seen many Q stars come through town. Makes you wonder what might have been had they ended up in Ch'town.
